![]() This era in my life was when it became clear to me that I was meant to create stories that moved people mentally and physically. Morrison, and most importantly, my idol – Zane. There was never a moment I didn’t have a book in my hand after that from authors in the Urban Lit/Black Romance category: Terri Woods, Eric Jerome Dickey, Omar Tyree, Mary B. LIFE! I couldn’t believe books could be so good lol. It was at that age, I was introduced to Sistah Souljah’s The Coldest Winter Ever. I also had a thing for Mafia centered books… don’t ask LOL.īy the age of 13, I had over 50 poems, 15 songs, and several short stories that I had written. At first, I was sure my genre was going to be in the style of everything Harlem Renaissance: Zora Neale Hurston, Langston Hughes, Claude McKay, and poet Anne Spencer, I couldn’t get enough of them (and to this day Harlem is STILL my favorite poem). I wanted to read everything and anything I could, especially if written by a black author. Stein’s Fear Street Series (as I have always loved reading suspense and thrillers, even at an early age), but it was in my high school years when I first read Native Son and Black Boy by Richard Wright that I started to really understand the importance of the Black voice in literature. It started off with Babysitters’ Club and moved up to R.L. I have always been in love with books and reading. so I thought.įrom the moment I was able to pick up a pen, my imagination had allowed me to put thoughts on paper to try to give the world a chance to see what I was seeing. As a kid from the Eastside of Detroit, none of these options seemed feasible to most, and I knew I could do any of them, but being a journalist, a writer, anything dealing with telling stories, I knew that would be the easiest and most fun for me to attain. I had the spirit for the stage, the orator skills for the courtroom and the ability to tell stories for a career in media. There were only 3 things in my future as a child, I was either going to be an actress, a lawyer, or a journalist. ![]() We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far. ![]() Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicki Charest.
